The Last Time I Lied Sager.jpg

Book Review: THE LAST TIME I LIED by Riley Sager

July 18, 2018

What do you get when you cross a creepy cabin in the woods with drama worthy of Pretty Little Liars? Meet one of the most deliciously entertaining “popcorn reads” of the summer: THE LAST TIME I LIED by Riley Sager. Sager took the crime writing world by storm last year with his stellar psychological thriller FINAL GIRLS, and this July, he’s back—and, with his newest release, he’s proving once and for all that he’s here to stay. In his New York Times bestselling novel THE LAST TIME I LIED, Sager leans into a subtle brand of suspense driven by interpersonal secrets, richly-developed atmosphere, and drama a plenty. Where FINAL GIRLS was an ode to slasher films, THE LAST TIME I LIED isn’t quite as dark or bloody—though it’s no feel-good summer camp story, either. Sager strikes a pitch-perfect balance between horror elements and a lighter suspense plotline in his newest book, and the result is an endlessly entertaining summer binge-read. Pick up THE LAST TIME I LIED for its gorgeous cover, stay for its addictive and twisty story of years-old secrets and a summer vacation gone very wrong.

Author Q&A: Shannon Kirk, IN THE VINES

July 16, 2018

At long last, one of summer’s most fresh - and twisted - psychological thrillers is on sale! IN THE VINES by Shannon Kirk releases today (7/17/18) from Thomas & Mercer, and I'll just keep it short and sweet: this is one you need to read.  In her deranged story of family secrets, Kirk weaves a mystery that will leave readers breathless; this book is equal parts frantic drama and lush writing, and the resulting combination is an absolute winner. IN THE VINES is bound to be one of the most unique reads on your summer TBR—and today on CBTB, I’m thrilled to welcome author Shannon Kirk to give us the inside scoop on her scorching summer suspense novel!

Author Q&A: Sandie Jones, THE OTHER WOMAN

July 13, 2018

If you’re a reader who loves keeping up with the hottest new psychological suspense novels, you’ve probably already heard the buzz surrounding Sandie Jones’ debut THE OTHER WOMAN. Releasing in August from Minotaur Books, THE OTHER WOMAN is perfect beach reading material: twisty, page-turning suspense that you’ll want to devour in one sitting. I'm thrilled to welcome Sandie Jones to Crime by the Book today to give CBTB readers an exclusive glimpse into THE OTHER WOMAN in anticipation of its August release! If you've loved domestic thrillers like BEHIND CLOSED DOORS by B.A. Paris and LIE TO ME by J.T. Ellison, you will love Jones' addition to the ever-growing psychological suspense genre; moreover, you'll love that Jones puts her own unique spin on the genre in her debut, too. While you wait for THE OTHER WOMAN's release in about a month, you can learn more about the book in today's bog post: an exclusive Q&A with Sandie Jones, sharing all the background information you'll need to know about one of summer's buzziest domestic suspense novels.

Exclusive Cover Reveal: THE RECKONING by Yrsa Sigurdardottir

July 10, 2018

Earlier this year, Minotaur Books launched Sigurdardottir’s newest series (known as the Children's House series) with THE LEGACY. THE LEGACY is an engrossing blend of masterful police procedural and chilling Nordic backdrop; in short, it’s exactly the kind of crime writing I love most. Suffice it to say, I’ve been not-so-patiently awaiting more details on the second installment in this superb series - and today on Crime by the Book, I’m thrilled to share an exclusive first look at the cover of the second book in the Children’s House series: THE RECKONING, on sale February 12th, 2019 from Minotaur!

I Remember You Yrsa.jpg

Book Review: I REMEMBER YOU by Yrsa Sigurdardottir

July 6, 2018

Yrsa Sigurdardottir is a just-plain-incredible talent. Sigurdardottir is known as Iceland’s Queen of Crime, and every single book of hers that I read reinforces just how well-deserved this title really is. A hallmark of Yrsa’s crime writing is her ability to blend strong mystery writing with truly dark, almost horror-inspired plotlines—and in I REMEMBER YOU, she puts her dark imagination on full display. I REMEMBER YOU is, in fact, better described as a ghost story than a crime novel, though at its heart it certainly has a compelling mystery for readers to unravel. In this hair-raising story of suspense, a group of friends set out to a remote Icelandic village in order to renovate a house they have recently purchased. But as they settle in and begin their work, it becomes clear that something on the island doesn’t want them to stay... I REMEMBER YOU is slow-burning, immersive, utterly chilling suspense—I was glued to this book from the first page to the last. You know that feeling when you’re loving a book so much, you just want to savor every single page? That was me with I REMEMBER YOU.
