#ReadWithCBTB Book Pick: JAR OF HEARTS by Jennifer Hillier
Book Discussion: Saturday, September 12, 2020 at 12:00 PM EST
Guest Host: Lisa Unger
Hi Friends!
For our next #ReadWithCBTB book selection, we’re throwing it back to a slightly-older title that I simply cannot believe I haven’t read yet. I’ve been hearing nothing but fantastic things about JAR OF HEARTS by Jennifer Hillier for well over a year now, and I finally bought myself a copy of the book as a birthday gift to myself this summer. I am so excited to dive into this book, and I hope you guys will join me in reading it this month! If you’re new to #ReadWithCBTB, first of all, welcome—we are so happy you’re here! You may find it helpful to check out my first #ReadWithCBTB post for a bit of an explanation of this virtual event series. If you have any questions, you are always welcome to email me at crimebythebook@gmail.com! If you’re a returning #ReadWithCBTB participant, I’m so grateful you’ve chosen to participate again, and I can’t wait to discuss our next book selection with you!
Over the next few weeks, join me in buddy-reading JAR OF HEARTS—a chilling thriller that follows a woman whose high school sweetheart turned out to be a serial killer. (If that doesn’t sell you on this book… I don’t know what will!) On September 12, we will meet (on Zoom!) to discuss the book—and we’ll be joined by an incredible guest host. This month, we will be joined by the fantastic psychological thriller writer Lisa Unger to discuss Jennifer Hillier’s JAR OF HEARTS! Lisa was one of the early supporters of this book when it first published (she praised JAR OF HEARTS as a “smart, edgy thriller with lots of surprises” and said that she was “hooked on page one”!). Lisa is also a fantastic thriller writer in her own right—I loved her book THE STRANGER INSIDE (which releases in a gorgeous new paperback edition on August 25!), and her upcoming fall release CONFESSIONS ON THE 7:45 is one of my personal most-anticipated Fall 2020 reads! I absolutely cannot wait to discuss JAR OF HEARTS with Lisa, and ask her a few questions about her own writing career, too!
SO HOW DO YOU PARTICIPATE IN #READWITHCBTB?
Joining in this virtual buddy read and book discussion is easy! Simply read Jennifer Hillier’s JAR OF HEARTS on your own schedule over the next month (find some suggested places you can buy the book below!), and register via email at the link below. The day before the event takes place (September 11, in this case!), I will send everyone who has signed up via email a direct Zoom link that you can use to tune in for this book discussion. To keep the logistics for the event as smooth as possible, we will run this Zoom meeting in a webinar-style format, where Lisa and I will appear on video and audio, but we will welcome all reader thoughts, questions, and comments in the Zoom chat box! I will also solicit questions from readers via email in advance of the chat, so if you have a question you want to be sure we address in the Zoom conversation, you can submit it early! One important note: if you have already signed up for the #ReadWithCBTB email list, you do NOT need to sign up again. You are already on the list!
It’s totally free to participate in these events—all you’ll need is a computer or mobile device that will allow you access to the internet to tune in for the discussion via Zoom. (Please note: when we discuss these books, we’ll be discussing all of the book. There will be spoilers in these book discussions, which is why we are hosting them via Zoom, rather than Instagram Live. I don’t want anyone accidentally stumbling upon these chats and having the book spoiled for them!)
I can’t wait to start reading with you guys!

ABOUT Jennifer Hillier’s JAR OF HEARTS:
This is the story of three best friends: one who was murdered, one who went to prison, and one who's been searching for the truth all these years . . .
When she was sixteen years old, Angela Wong―one of the most popular girls in school―disappeared without a trace. Nobody ever suspected that her best friend, Georgina Shaw, now an executive and rising star at her Seattle pharmaceutical company, was involved in any way. Certainly not Kaiser Brody, who was close with both girls back in high school.
But fourteen years later, Angela Wong's remains are discovered in the woods near Geo's childhood home. And Kaiser―now a detective with Seattle PD―finally learns the truth: Angela was a victim of Calvin James. The same Calvin James who murdered at least three other women.
To the authorities, Calvin is a serial killer. But to Geo, he's something else entirely. Back in high school, Calvin was Geo's first love. Turbulent and often volatile, their relationship bordered on obsession from the moment they met right up until the night Angela was killed.
For fourteen years, Geo knew what happened to Angela and told no one. For fourteen years, she carried the secret of Angela's death until Geo was arrested and sent to prison.
While everyone thinks they finally know the truth, there are dark secrets buried deep. And what happened that fateful night is more complex and more chilling than anyone really knows. Now the obsessive past catches up with the deadly present when new bodies begin to turn up, killed in the exact same manner as Angela Wong.
How far will someone go to bury her secrets and hide her grief? How long can you get away with a lie? How long can you live with it? Find out in Jennifer Hillier's Jar of Hearts.
