Happy Sunday, readers! Welcome back to our weekly spotlight on Scandinavian crime fiction! If youβre new to CBTB, every Sunday this November, Iβm spotlighting crime fiction from a particular Nordic country, and sharing a rundown of my personal favorite crime writers from that country. Weβve already explored Norwegian crime fiction, Swedish crime fiction, and Danish crime fiction, and this week, weβre βtravelingβ to beautiful Iceland! This blog post is going to be shorter than my previous Nordic Noir November posts for a very simple reason: when it comes to Icelandic crime fiction, I have two ride-or-die authors whose work I will literally always read, no matter what, and those are the two authors I want to spotlight for you all today. There are a number of fantastically talented Icelandic crime writers whose work has been translated to English (and many more whose work looks very intriguing, and I hope will be translated to English soon!), but as has been the case with all my previous installments in this series, I want to keep this list focused on highlighting just my personal favorite authors from each country. When it comes to Icelandic crime fiction, that means Iβve got two authors to spotlight for you today! Whether you love creepy, horror-inspired thrillers, modern mysteries with classic crime vibes, or gritty procedurals, my two favorite Icelandic crime writers have a book for you.

If thereβs one thing I love as a reader, itβs finding a crime fiction series that I canβt put down. Thereβs something so special about finding a fictional world that you never want to leave, and if youβre in the market for a crime fiction series to sink your teeth into while you stay home, youβve come to the right place. In this blog post, Iβm rounding up my personal favorite crime fiction seriesβthe series I personally come back to over and over again. As youβll see in this list, my personal tastes skew Nordic. Youβll find here a whole assortment of (if I may say so myself!) top-notch Scandinavian crime series to immerse yourself in this spring, and sprinkled in among these Nordic picks are a number of excellent serial killer thrillers and police procedurals from elsewhere in the world, too. These books have a lot of differencesβsome are fast-paced, some are slow-burns; some are gritty and violent, some are stylish and refinedβbut they are all staples of my crime fiction library, and books that I would highly recommend to any crime reader.

There's nothing I love more than a great Nordic Noir novel, and todayβs blog post is dedicated to celebrating the best of the Scandinavian crime novels 2019 had to offer. 2019 saw the return of some of my personal favorite authors (new NesbΓΈ book, hereβs looking at you!) and introduced me to a number of new-to-me authors as well. As always with these sorts of lists, narrowing down my picks proved a very tricky task, but Iβm absolutely confident that the titles listed here will deliver all the atmosphere, rich character development, and gritty mystery that any Nordic Noir reader could hope for. Whether youβre a longtime fan of this category of crime fiction or are new to the genre entirely, thereβs a book for you on this list.

Itβs the rare author who truly gets better with each new book, but then nothing about Yrsa Sigurdardottir is typical. A director at one of Icelandβs largest engineering firms, Yrsaβs second job just happens to be as a bestselling crime novelist with a growing international readership and a fantastic movie adaptation of one of her novels, I Remember You, under her belt, too. Yrsaβs qualifications alone make her a great candidate for your next author to investigate, and thatβs before we even talk about her books themselves. Yrsa is currently in the middle of releasing her Childrenβs House seriesβa stellar Nordic crime series that is one of my favorite new series launches of the 2010βs. THE ABSOLUTION, the third installment in the Childrenβs House series, releases in the US on February 11, 2020, and itβs the best book in the series yet. True to theme for the Childrenβs House books, THE ABSOLUTION explores the lasting impact of childhood trauma; in this case, our story centers around the insidious nature of bullying. As with all of her series releases thus far, Yrsa displays in THE ABSOLUTION astute emotional intelligence and crafty, masterful plotting in equal measure. A rich, layered crime novel with a dark atmosphere and darker crimes, THE ABSOLUTION is a must-read this winter.
