Raw, gritty, and rough around the edges, Jo NesbΓΈβs MACBETH captures the ageless dark heart of Shakespeareβs original work, and packages it in the razor-sharp crime writing only NesbΓΈ can deliver. Revenge, love, guiltβthemes that permeate NesbΓΈβs own works are perfectly reflected in Shakespeareβs Macbeth, and come together in NesbΓΈβs remake to pitch-perfect effect. It takes a masterful writer to deliver what NesbΓΈ does here: a remake as fiercely original and as it is faithful to its inspiration. MACBETH is a must-read for readers of Shakespeare and fans of Nordic Noir alike.

If thereβs one book that has been my most-anticipated ever since I started Crime by the Book, itβs this one. Jo NesbΓΈβs MACBETH (Hogarth; April 10, 2018) is part of the Hogarth Shakespeareβs collection of modern-day retellings in honor of the Bardβs 400th birthdayβand itβs a story worthy of its namesake in every sense. This book doesnβt release until April 2018, but trust me: I wouldnβt bring this book up so early if it werenβt a must-read. NesbΓΈβs MACBETH is a modern-day crime novel with the beating heart of Shakespeareβs play: it captures the moral complexity, menace, and despair of the original, with a grim, gritty twist that is trademark NesbΓΈ.
