Book Review: THE DARKNESS by Ragnar Jonasson

August 8, 2018

THE DARKNESS by Ragnar Jonasson
Minotaur Books 10/16/18
CBTB Rating: 5/5
The Verdict: atmospheric, binge-worthy, and a contender for favorite book of the year

Ragnar Jonasson, you have simply outdone yourself. Just when I thought I couldn’t love Ragnar’s books more, he goes and writes THE DARKNESS - and man, is it excellent. Already known around the world for his modern classic Dark Iceland series, Ragnar proves with THE DARKNESS that his winning brand of crime fiction can work just as well - if not better - in a new series as it did in his Ari Thor books. THE DARKNESS has all the brooding atmosphere of the Dark Iceland books with a creativity and breath-of-fresh-air protagonist all its own. Readers will travel eagerly from the streets of Reykjavik to the desolate wilds of Iceland alongside Hulda, a detective whose retirement is on the horizon—and who is determined to make the most of her time left on the force. There’s an addictiveness to THE DARKNESS that elevates this read—Jonasson beautifully balances slow-burning plotting with binge-worthy tension, and the result is just plain gripping. There’s so much that works so well in this book, and I have a feeling Jonasson’s new series will become my favorite of his work… that is, until we see what this talented writer comes up with next. If THE DARKNESS isn’t yet on your fall reading list, it absolutely belongs there. There’s little doubt in my mind that this book will be one of my favorites of 2018.

Plot Summary:
The body of a young Russian woman washes up on an Icelandic shore. After a cursory investigation, the death is declared a suicide and the case is quietly closed.

Over a year later Detective Inspector Hulda Hermannsdóttir of the Reykjavík police is forced into early retirement at 64. She dreads the loneliness, and the memories of her dark past that threaten to come back to haunt her. But before she leaves she is given two weeks to solve a single cold case of her choice. She knows which one: the Russian woman whose hope for asylum ended on the dark, cold shore of an unfamiliar country. Soon Hulda discovers that another young woman vanished at the same time, and that no one is telling her the whole story. Even her colleagues in the police seem determined to put the brakes on her investigation. Meanwhile the clock is ticking.

Hulda will find the killer, even if it means putting her own life in danger.

The Darkness Ragnar Jonasson.jpg

With so many levels of this book working so well, let’s start with the very first element of THE DARKNESS that caught my eye: the book’s protagonist, Hulda. I love a good crime series, and I love getting invested in a character who you can come back to over and over again. When I first learned of THE DARKNESS, I was immediately struck by just how few of the series I personally follow feature a middle-aged female protagonist. There are so many middle-aged men in the pages of the books I love - in fact, my all-time favorite series (Nesbo’s Harry Hole series) falls under that exact category - but the same really can't be said for middle-aged women. Now, this isn’t to say that there aren’t also tons of examples of strong female leads in crime fiction as well, but I was struck by how few of the female characters I’ve read are introduced to readers later in their lives. In THE DARKNESS, readers meet protagonist Hulda Hermannsdottir at the end of a long and fruitful career; in fact, we meet her right as she is given the news that she is going to be forced into early retirement. Having worked tirelessly in her career for years, Hulda’s astonishment and anger at this turn of events becomes a focal point of the story. To Hulda (and the reader’s) chagrin, it becomes apparent that she is being pushed out of her job to make space for a young (and male) hot-shot to rise more quickly through the ranks.

Hulda is no stranger to discrimination—she has had to advocate tirelessly for every inch of upward movement she has had in her career, and she isn’t about to give up without a fight. Readers will find themselves firmly in Hulda’s corner as she speaks out against the challenges of being a woman in a male-dominated field, and will cheer for her as she determines to solve one last case before she’s shown the door. The case she selects? A cold case involving the death of an asylum seeker, a young woman who fled from Russia to Iceland, only to die under suspicious circumstances. Beyond the surface-level intrigue of this crime, there’s a deeper poignancy to this pairing that I loved: a female police officer seeking out justice for another woman, a woman whose life the male-dominated system has largely tossed aside, felt at once raw and empowering. There has been lots of conversation recently about the role of female victims in crime fiction—and THE DARKNESS is, to me, proof of how this role can be written tactfully and without feeling exploitative. Jonasson handles this potentially sensitive subject matter beautifully, and readers will be rooting for Hulda as she impresses upon her colleagues the value of this asylum-seeker’s life—and the value of finding justice for the brutal and heartless way in which it was ended.

The Darkness Ragnar.jpg

Beyond the story’s compelling protagonist, there is the ever-present “character” of Iceland. As in Jonasson’s Dark Iceland books, the landscape of Iceland itself plays a significant role in THE DARKNESS. This is one of the qualities I love most about Ragnar Jonasson’s writing; Iceland has such natural beauty, so much of it very spare and unforgiving, and its influence seems to infuse every page of Jonasson’s books. THE DARKNESS is no exception. Though Hulda works and lives in the city of Reykjavik, her investigation quickly takes her out into the wilds of the country. In both Hulda’s present and a series of flashbacks by an unnamed narrator, readers witness the beauty of Iceland’s natural landscape. I typically prefer books set in cities, but Jonasson always manages to strike a beautiful balance between the energy of city life and the truly stunning mystique of Iceland’s more remote towns—and if you’re not yet sure what I’m talking about, you can check out this photo tour of Siglufjordur, the town that plays host to much of Jonasson’s Dark Iceland series. In THE DARKNESS, readers will be all too eager to see Iceland’s natural beauty - and, occasionally, its dangers - through Hulda’s eyes. Reading THE DARKNESS transported me out of New York City and back to one of my favorite parts of the world, and I loved every moment of this chilling journey.

THE DARKNESS showcases an author who has reached a new level of maturity. Ragnar Jonasson has always been a superb writer, but there's a precision of plotting - and a willingness to take risks - on display here that elevated this book over the Dark Iceland series for me. I would absolutely hate to spoil the inventiveness that's at work here for readers—it's actually better to go into this one blind in that respect, but suffice it to say that Jonasson has pulled out all the stops to make this new series unlike anything you've read before. Jonasson is an author at the top of his game in THE DARKNESS, and if his track record is any indication, his next book will be even better. There’s a little bit of magic in Jonasson’s writing that I’m not quite sure any words of mine will quite be able to capture—so instead, let's try something a little different: let me paint you a little picture of how I felt while reading THE DARKNESS, and how I'm sure you will feel while reading it, too. Reading THE DARKNESS feels like you've captured that perfect peacefulness of a snow day and found a way to carry it around with you in your book bag. Imagine that you’re sitting in your home or your apartment by a window. You don't have anywhere to be that day, and you're looking at out at the snow falling on the street, a cup of coffee at hand and a gripping book on your lap. That book is THE DARKNESS, and you are going to love it.

Book Review: THE STRANGER INSIDE by Lisa Unger
Sep 19, 2019

Love crime novels that put a fresh spin on the serial killer thriller? Looking for a suspense book that reads a bit like an episode of Criminal Minds? I’ve got the book for you. This week, Lisa Unger - a prolific New York Times bestselling author with 17 novels under her belt - has released a harrowing “popcorn read” of a thriller: THE STRANGER INSIDE. This gripping character study takes readers inside the mind of a villain with terrifying authenticity, examining the fallout of a brutal crime through the inner lives of its survivors. Following a young mother living in suburban bliss, but harboring a dark past, THE STRANGER INSIDE doesn’t ask “whodunnit”—instead, it asks “whydunnit,” and the answer will be revealed to the reader bit by tantalizing bit over this book’s 380-odd pages. Lisa Unger is a master at crafting truly palpable tension, and her skill at plotting and suspense-building ensure that readers will be glued to the pages here, even long after the killer’s identity has been revealed. THE STRANGER INSIDE will prove to be a surefire hit for crime fiction readers looking for a page-turning, richly developed thriller with serious entertainment value. My only complaint? That now I’ve got to wait patiently to see what Lisa Unger does next.

Q&A: Søren Sveistrup, Author of The Chestnut Man
Sep 6, 2019

I’m thrilled to welcome Søren Sveistrup to Crime by the Book today to give CBTB readers an inside glimpse into one of the season’s hottest thrillers: THE CHESTNUT MAN. Søren’s debut novel is garnering incredible buzz, and the read lives up to the hype. In THE CHESTNUT MAN, an unlikely duo of police officers in Copenhagen, Denmark must track down a brutal killer with a chilling calling card - “chestnut men,” dolls crafted out of chestnuts and matchsticks. THE CHESTNUT MAN is a big, layered, intricate crime novel—the kind of story that Nordic Noir dreams are made of. With harrowing, clever plotting and made-for-television tension and drama, THE CHESTNUT MAN will thrill fans of Jo Nesbo and Stieg Larsson. Søren Sveistrup is the creator of the hit television show The Killing, and THE CHESTNUT MAN is his debut novel. Read on for the inside scoop on THE CHESTNUT MAN, including plot details, a snippet from my full review, and my conversation with the author.

Book Review: THE CHESTNUT MAN by Søren Sveistrup
Sep 2, 2019

One of the season’s most hotly-anticipated new thrillers is finally here. From the mind that created the sensational television show The Killing now comes an equally-gripping - and equally-chilling - Nordic thriller: THE CHESTNUT MAN. In his debut crime novel, Søren Sveistrup instantly establishes himself as a must-read author for fans of Nordic Noir legends Jo Nesbø and Lars Kepler—and, for that matter, as a must-read for any reader who just wants a gripping thriller to sink their teeth into this fall. THE CHESTNUT MAN is good, old-fashioned Scandinavian crime fiction; it’s a hefty book, clocking in at 528 pages in the American hardcover edition, and immerses the reader in an intricate plot moving from the mundane details of police work to the cinematic (and gruesome) crimes of a twisted killer. If the plot of THE CHESTNUT MAN seems a bit familiar at first glance, don’t worry; Sveistrup sets up his debut novel in well-tread territory, but it quickly separates itself from the pack with richly-drawn characters, made-for-TV pacing, and, naturally, a killer with a modus operandi so sinister, you’ll want to read this book with all the lights on. The buzz surrounding the publication of THE CHESTNUT MAN has been significant; it’s earned incredible pre-publication praise, is a September Book of the Month Club selection, and is soon to be a Netflix original series. The buzz is warranted here; Sveistrup’s debut is a must-read for the crime reader looking for a big, bold, spend-all-day-reading thriller.

Book Review: THE TURN OF THE KEY by Ruth Ware
Aug 13, 2019

Every summer, there’s one thing I look forward to arguably more than anything else: the newest novel by Ruth Ware. And every summer, without fail, Ruth Ware outdoes whatever brilliant novel she delivered the year prior. Ware’s 2019 release is no exception - THE TURN OF THE KEY is Ware’s best novel yet. Equal parts old-school gothic suspense and modern psychological thriller, THE TURN OF THE KEY seamlessly blends an homage to Henry James’ The Turn of the Screw with a page-turning story of surveillance, paranoia, and domestic drama. Following a young woman who accepts a nannying position at a state-of-the-art smart house in the Scottish Highlands, only to wind up imprisoned for the death of one of the children in her care, THE TURN OF THE KEY is one of the most binge-worthy, genuinely addictive suspense novels you will read this summer. It’s a truth universally acknowledged that if Ruth Ware writes a suspense novel, yours truly will read it and love it, but THE TURN OF THE KEY blew even this die-hard Ruth Ware fan away. If you haven’t already picked up Ruth Ware’s newest, add it to your TBR immediately. I’m calling it right now: this is one of my favorite books of 2019.

Book Review: THE HEART KEEPER by Alex Dahl
Aug 4, 2019

What do you get when you cross Scandinavian sensibility with psychological suspense? Enter Alex Dahl’s unputdownable, wholly original brand of Nordic psychological thriller. On the heels of 2018’s excellent The Boy at the Door, Dahl’s 2019 release THE HEART KEEPER delivers a story of motherhood and grief even more emotionally impactful and addictive than Dahl’s first US outing. In THE HEART KEEPER, tragedy strikes a Norwegian family, and their young daughter passes away. But somewhere else in Norway, another family’s life is changed for the better when their young girl receives the call that she’s been waiting for her whole life: a donor heart has been found for her, at long last. As the paths between the two families slowly but surely converge, a mother’s grief turns to dark obsession. THE HEART KEEPER is a slow-burn story, but don’t let its pacing fool you: this book is utterly riveting with just the right amount of juicy drama—the kind of novel you’ll find yourself turning off the TV just to keep reading. The visceral emotion on display in this story, and Dahl’s uncanny ability to write characters whose twisted actions do nothing to diminish our sympathy for them, make THE HEART KEEPER a Summer 2019 standout. Alex Dahl continues to distinguish herself for her compelling blend of Nordic and domestic noir, and THE HEART KEEPER is another feather in the cap of this up-and-coming crime fiction star.

Q&A: Alex Dahl, Author of THE HEART KEEPER
Jul 18, 2019

Some books stick with you long after you’ve turned their final page. For me, Alex Dahl’s newest suspense novel THE HEART KEEPER was such a book—and I’m absolutely thrilled to welcome Alex to CBTB today to discuss her intense, emotionally-resonant new release with us! If you’re not yet familiar with Alex Dahl’s work, consider this the perfect opportunity to dip into her world. Dahl is a Norwegian author whose books bridge the gap between Scandinavian sensibility and modern, razor-sharp psychological suspense. Dahl’s writing is easy to devour, but it’s got very sharp teeth; her books put womanhood under the microscope, wrapping resonant social commentary up in binge-worthy suspense plots. Dahl’s debut novel THE BOY AT THE DOOR released in the U.S. last year, and this week, she’s back. In THE HEART KEEPER, Dahl explores the powerful force of a mother’s love in the face of tragedy—and considers what happens when that tragedy drives an ordinary person to do unthinkable things. THE HEART KEEPER is in many ways a quiet novel - it’s not a story of rip-roaring action or shocking violence - but its underlying intensity and emotional charge make it utterly unputdownable. I loved Dahl’s newest novel, and was thrilled to have the opportunity to ask her a few of my most pressing questions about it!

Q&A: Sandie Jones, Author of THE FIRST MISTAKE
Jul 11, 2019

Still on the hunt for the perfect domestic thriller to bring on your next vacation? Look no further: Sandie Jones’ THE FIRST MISTAKE is the book for you. Twisty and shocking, THE FIRST MISTAKE takes a relatively familiar suspense setup - a wife who fears her spouse is being unfaithful - and pushes it in addictive, jaw-dropping new directions. Sandie Jones made a splash with her debut novel The Other Woman, which was a selection for Reese Witherspoon’s book club and a New York Times bestseller… but I actually loved THE FIRST MISTAKE even more. This book is a perfect example of what I like to call “popcorn reading”: an utterly entertaining story that you’ll want to binge-read in one or two sittings. Fans of B.A. Paris, J.P. Delaney, and Shari Lapena will absolutely love the domestic drama, plot twists, and chilling suspense Sandie Jones serves up in THE FIRST MISTAKE. I’m thrilled to welcome Sandie Jones to CBTB today to talk all things THE FIRST MISTAKE! In this blog post, you’ll find all the details on Sandie’s newest release, an excerpt from my review of this deliciously addictive suspense read, and, of course, my conversation with Sandie.

Avoiding the Sunday scaries with a good book & a giant latte (or two) ☕️🖤 •
How has everyone’s weekend been?! I’ve gotta be honest I have NOT been as productive as I hoped to be, but I’m giving myself a break cause I’ve had lots of fun stuff going on this weekend & that is just as important as checking items off my to-do list. 🙌🏻🎉 BUT now I’m gearing up for the week ahead & trying to get a number of things done before the day comes to an end! 💪🏻 •
This morning I ventured out to my favorite coffee shop for what was *supposed* to be a very quick little visit, but then one thing led to another and I ended up spending 3ish hours there hanging out, answering emails, & reading. 🤓 Not a bad way to spend a Sunday, that’s for sure. 🖤
•
I’ve made lots of progress in my current read - GOOD GIRLS LIE by J.T. Ellison - and it’s proving to be an even more intricate story than I had imagined. 👌🏻 Ellison always writes these psychological suspense novels that START as one simple premise, but the farther you dig into them, the more complex and layered they turn out to be. It’s a quality of her writing I love. These books are definitely easy to devour (they’re very accessible and engaging in tone, and they’re not overly dense), but they’ve got enough substance that you’ll find yourself really devoting your full attention to them. 👌🏻 GOOD GIRLS LIE has a heck of a lot of detail to it—it immerses you in the social structure & hierarchy of the boarding school at its center, and it also takes you back in time a little bit to begin piecing together the backstory of its enigmatic protagonist, a young woman named Ash who has just moved to the US from England to attend this prestigious school. 🔎 If you love stories that really dig into prep school life but with suspicious characters & an ominous atmosphere, this book might be right up your alley. 🕵🏻‍♀️
•
How was your weekend?! Anyone else tackling a to-do list this evening? 💪🏻
Like a kid in a candy store every time I visit the Strand. 📚❤️ so. many. used & new crime novels I want to bring home with me. 😂🕵🏻‍♀️
•
Being a bookworm in NYC is truly heaven - this city has SO many bookstores, and I get so many questions from you guys about my faves to visit. You already know I love @themysteriousbookshop (based on my 104829 posts there 😂🖤) so today I want to spotlight @strandbookstore: an incredible used & new bookstore with literally ALL the books your heart could desire. 🙌🏻 The Strand has a huge selection of crime fiction (check out my stories for more pics from their mystery & suspense section!) and they ALSO have books of pretty much any and every genre your heart could desire. 🤓 BONUS that they have used books at lower prices, which makes my wallet happy. 😂📚
•
In reading news, DANG I am loving J.T. Ellison’s new book. I have big plans for my morning tomorrow aka staying in bed as long as possible & reading as much of this book as I can. Aka the perfect Saturday morning to me. 😉 GOOD GIRLS LIE opens with a cinematic & totally chilling scene: the body of a young woman is found on the campus of a prestigious boarding school, displayed in a *very* memorable and chilling fashion. 😳 The author then takes us back in time to introduce us to this same young woman, and we follow her journey as she arrives at the boarding school at the first time—and as we learn that this young woman has a propensity for lying, a bad habit she doesn’t seem to want to change at her new school. AND to make things even juicier & more enticing, there’s an anonymous narrator recounting the story of the protagonist, and I am SO into the way this builds suspense & intrigue. 👌🏻🙌🏻 I am already feeling like this is going to be another J.T. Ellison winner for me, but I’ll keep you guys posted! 🕵🏻‍♀️

Where do you live? Any amazing bookstores (or libraries!) in your area? 🤓📚

Today on the blog I’m so excited to share my review of THE STRANGER INSIDE by Lisa Unger - a gripping suspense novel that delves into the minds of its characters in SUCH an effective & addictive way. 😱 THE STRANGER INSIDE deals with a series of vigilante killings, and a young woman whose past seems to be tied to them in a dark and mysterious way. 🔎 This book delivers such a fresh take on the serial killer thriller, and will take the reader down totally unexpected paths. THE STRANGER INSIDE is almost more of a character study than anything else, but it’s got a serial killer at its core AND a suburban housewife who is hiding some very dark secrets in her past. 😳 It’s filled with entertainment value, and definitely qualifies as a “popcorn read” - aka a thriller you’ll want to devour in one or two sittings. 👌🏻🙌🏻 If you love TV shows like Criminal Minds, you will LOVE Lisa Unger’s new book. THE STRANGER INSIDE is on sale this week, and you can catch my full review linked in my bio! 🕵🏻‍♀️
•
In reading news, I’ve dug into GOOD GIRLS LIE by J.T. Ellison and I can safely say she pulls NO punches with this story’s opener... this is one of those books that grabs your attention from literally the first sentence. 😱 I’ll have a more thorough reading update to come on this one soon! 🤓
•
What are you reading this Thriller Thursday?! 🕵🏻‍♀️🖤
Spent my lunch break like this 👆🏻 & it was a lovely little breather amidst a busy work day. ☺️🖤 •
Before I dig into my initial thoughts on my new read (GOOD GIRLS LIE by JT Ellison), I thought I should press pause and quickly give you guys my final thoughts on Simone St. James’ forthcoming release, THE SUN DOWN MOTEL 🕵🏻‍♀️ I’ll have a full review of this one up on my blog closer to the book’s release in early 2020 - but in the meantime, catch a little preview of my thoughts right here 👇🏻 and/or pop over to my website to read an exclusive excerpt from the book! 🤓 link in my bio!
•
THE SUN DOWN MOTEL is an excellent standalone suspense novel from an author with a true knack for developing rich, spine-tingling atmosphere and weaving together complex stories effortlessly. This book will hook readers with its instantly-intriguing plot - a story about a young woman moving to the small town where her aunt disappeared years prior in a hunt for the truth - but readers will find even more intrigue within its pages than they might originally imagine. THE SUN DOWN MOTEL tells the story of a small town with a dark history — a history of women disappearing. 😳 But the two women central to this story refuse to be victims, and both (in their own time period) set out to uncover the truth, and prevent anyone else from coming to harm. This book has strong female protagonists, spine-tingling chills, a haunted motel, a serial killer, and meticulously plotted dual narratives. 👌🏻 You have to be okay with some supernatural elements in your suspense in order to fully love this read (there are some ghosts 👻) BUT Simone St. James effortlessly blends these supernatural elements into the main mystery - they are NOT a distraction, more just another element of this book’s rich atmosphere. OH and one of the timelines in this story is in the 80’s, which is perfect for those of you who love a bit of a throwback vibe. 💯 All in all, I loved this one - I’m thinking it will be a 4.5/5 ⭐️ read for me!
•
I’m curious to learn a bit more about you guys! How many of you work in an office (like me😂), or have a 9-5 job? How many of you are students? Tell me more about yourself!!🖤
Got my hands on the new J.T. Ellison suspense novel & I’ve been quietly sitting back waiting for the right day to start reading it annnd today. Is. That. Day. 🕵🏻‍♀️🖤 GOOD GIRLS LIE is on sale 12/30!
•
Who are some of your ride-or-die favorite authors? 🕵🏻‍♀️ This book right here is the newest release from one of mine. 👉🏻 Over the past couple of years, J.T. Ellison has made her way onto my list of must-read suspense authors. If you watched my psychological suspense bookshelf tour a little while ago, you’ll know this already - but I fell HARD for her suspense novel LIE TO ME, and have considered her a must-read author ever since. 🤓 SO suffice it to say, I now am always on the lookout for a new JT Ellison thriller to devour... and we’re in luck, because there’s a new one coming this December!! 🔎
•
GOOD GIRLS LIE has a plot that reminds me a bit of Pretty Little Liars... aka I am *so* here for it. 🙌🏻👌🏻 If you love suspense novels set against academic backdrops, you’ll want to keep an eye on this one as we approach December. 🔎
•
GOOD GIRLS LIE is set in Virginia, at The Goode School - a prestigious prep school known as “Silent Ivy.” The boarding school of choice for daughters of the rich and influential, it only accepts the best and the brightest. Its elite status, long-held traditions and honor code are ideal for preparing exceptional young women for brilliant futures. But a stranger has come to Goode, and this ivy has turned poisonous. In a world where appearances are everything, and students are adept at pretending to follow the rules, no one questions the cruelties of secret societies or the dubious behavior of the privileged young women who expect to get away with murder. But when a popular student is found dead, the truth can not be ignored. 😳
•
I’m in the mood for a binge-worthy suspense read, and GOOD GIRLS LIE looks like exactly that. 🤓 I’ll report back on this one soon!! In the meantime: what do you think, does this one look up your alley?! 🕵🏻‍♀️🖤
A new week & lots to be excited about, including a current read I’m *loving*: THE SUN DOWN MOTEL by Simone St. James 🕵🏻‍♀️🖤

I spent the weekend home in CT, celebrating the wedding of a good friend (😍❤️) and hanging out with family!! It was SO much fun, and so nice to unplug a bit and just enjoy the company of friends & family. 🥰 Now it’s back to work and back to all things CBTB, and boy there is SO much to be excited about this week. A couple of books I love go on sale this week: Lisa Unger’s excellent THE STRANGER INSIDE, and on the work front, Shaun Hamill’s debut A COSMOLOGY OF MONSTERS. It’s gonna be SUCH a good week for new books!! 🤓

I’m savoring every last bit of Simone St. James’ forthcoming suspense novel THE SUN DOWN MOTEL. Like, I honestly do not want this book to end and may be slowing down my reading just to savor it... but at the same time, I’m dying to know how it will all wrap up, so I’m in a bit of a pickle here. 😂 THE SUN DOWN MOTEL is so much fun, so spine-tingling and creepy, and SO expertly laid out. Sometimes I’m wary of books told in two different timelines, but Simone St. James is an absolute pro at weaving together multiple timelines effectively & seamlessly. It’s SO so fascinating to watch two young women - one in the 80’s, one in the present day - chase down the truth about the bizarre happenings at the Sun Down Motel. 🕵🏻‍♀️ What makes it *extra* chilling is the knowledge that one of the young women (Viv, in the 80’s timeline) will herself end up disappearing, much like the cases of the young women she’s investigating.😳 There ARE ghostly elements to this story, something to be aware of, but I haven’t found them to be at all distracting from the story’s central mystery - they’re more just part of the book’s chilling atmosphere, if that makes sense! 👌🏻

Some books take a while to grab you, and other books catch your interest from page 1. My current read, THE SUN DOWN MOTEL by Simone St. James (@BerkleyPub) is one of the latter. 🙌🏻💯 I’ve been eagerly anticipating this release for *ages* now, and while publication day for the book is still a few months away, I’m here to tell you that it’s SO DANG GOOD and well worth adding to your TBR, particularly if you love a) mysteries with creepy hints of the supernatural, b) stories set in the 80’s, and/or c) compelling female characters. 🕵🏻‍♀️ Simone St. James is so crazy talented at writing these mysteries that weave together so many chilling elements, and combine to craft an unputdownable read. 👌🏻 AND I will say up front: don’t let the fact that this book has ghostly elements put you off. She writes these elements so authentically, and, if this book turns out like her previous novel THE BROKEN GIRLS, I’m betting there will be a very human/earthly solution to the story’s central mystery. I’ll of course keep you guys posted on that 🤓

THE SUN DOWN MOTEL drops readers into the small town of Fell, New York - a place where time has basically stood still since the 80’s. This story is told in dual timelines: one in the 80’s, following a young woman named Viv, and one in the present day, following her niece, Carly. Carly has come to Fell searching for the truth about her aunt. When Viv was in her 20’s, she vanished without a trace - and Carly is determined to find out why. But when Carly arrives in Fell, she finds a town with a dark history of young women going missing. 😳

Anyone else remember being OBSESSED with Simone St. James’ novel THE BROKEN GIRLS last year?! 🙋🏻‍♀️ I absolutely devoured that book (if you haven’t read it yet: it’s a creepy, atmospheric suspense novel told in dual timelines, centering around a boarding school with a dark history 😳) and have been waiting for a new release from Simone St. James ever since. WELL, folks, here it is!!! 👉🏻 THE SUN DOWN MOTEL promises to deliver all the spine-tingling chills & thrills of THE BROKEN GIRLS, and then some. 🤓 This suspense read centers around a motel in upstate New York where something just isn’t quite right... and follows the niece of a woman who disappeared there years prior as she searches for the truth about her aunt’s disappearance. 😱 This book looks SO good. I’m digging into this read tonight, and thanks to the team at Berkley, YOU can dip into it tonight too with an exclusive excerpt on CBTB! 🕵🏻‍♀️ Direct link to the post in my profile! 🔎

Upstate New York, 2017: Carly Kirk has never been able to let go of the story of her aunt Viv, who mysteriously disappeared from the Sun Down before she was born. Thank you all so much for the well wishes yesterday 🖤 I’m feeling so much more like myself today! I spent the day planning a very exciting blog feature for a highly-anticipated upcoming release, running errands around Manhattan, & of course stopping by a favorite coffee shop for a little pick-me-up. 🙌🏻👌🏻 •
Last night I finished THE DEAD GIRLS CLUB (on sale in December) & I’ve been pondering my feelings about it ever since. 🤔 There was a LOT I really enjoyed about this one: it has an awesomely creepy legend at its core, effectively weaves between past & present, and (in the past) does an excellent job exploring the intensity of teenage friendships and group dynamics. So much about this story - particularly when it comes to how it portrays teenage girls - rang so true to me, and even the parts that were centered around ghost stories felt authentic. 👌🏻 However, there were a few cons to this read for me as well. I found some components of this story *quite* repetitive, which became a bit distracting the more often they were repeated. I was also not entirely satisfied by the story’s final reveal - it felt a bit out-of-left-field to me, which is one of my major pet peeves in a suspense novel. 🙈 SO. Overall I definitely enjoyed this one, despite a few qualms, and will likely be giving it 4/5 or 3.5/5 ⭐️ when I write my full review. 🤓 •
Now I’m ready to put on some Netflix and do some admin work for my blog! (EMAILS I am coming for ya 😂💪🏻) what’s your favorite crime/suspense show on Netflix right now?!
