Cover Reveal and Mini Q&A: HIS & HERS by Alice Feeney
Available July 28, 2020
Alice Feeney has quickly become one of my favorite psychological thriller writers. From her addictive and twisty debut Sometimes I Lie to her dark and sinister I Know Who You Are, Feeney’s storytelling consistently delivers all the thrills, chills, and entertainment value a psychological suspense reader could want. A new novel from Alice Feeney is always cause for celebration, and today I’m absolutely thrilled to share with CBTB readers the cover reveal for her 2020 release, HIS & HERS, on sale July 2020! As an added bonus, Alice has generously answered a few of my most pressing questions on her forthcoming novel, and our mini Q&A can be found in this blog post, too.
Read on for all the details on Alice Feeney’s 2020 release, including plot summary, a mini Q&A with the author herself, links to pre-order the book should you wish to do so, and, of course, a look at the book’s stunning (and creepy!) cover.
Many thanks to the team at Flatiron for facilitating this cover reveal! Note: this blog post contains Amazon Affiliate links.
HIS & HERS BY ALICE FEENEY
COMING JULY 2020
About the Book:
There are two sides to every story: yours and mine, ours and theirs, His & Hers. Which means someone is always lying.
Anna Andrews finally has what she wants. Almost. She’s worked hard to become the main TV presenter of the BBC’s lunchtime news, putting work before friends, family, and her now ex-husband. So, when someone threatens to take her dream job away, she’ll do almost anything to keep it.
When asked to cover a murder in Blackdown―the sleepy countryside village where she grew up―Anna is reluctant to go. But when the victim turns out to be one of her childhood friends, she can’t leave. It soon becomes clear that Anna isn’t just covering the story, she’s at the heart of it.
DCI Jack Harper left London for a reason, but never thought he’d end up working in a place like Blackdown. When the body of a young woman is discovered, Jack decides not to tell anyone that he knew the victim, until he begins to realise he is a suspect in his own murder investigation.
One of them knows more than they are letting on. Someone isn’t telling the truth. Alternating between Anna's and Jack's points of view, His & Hers is a fast-paced, complex, and dark puzzle that will keep readers guessing until the very end.
Mini Q&A: Alice Feeney
His & Hers
Crime by the Book: I am so, so excited for your new psychological thriller! In your own words, what is His & Hers about?
Alice Feeney: His & Hers is about a workaholic BBC news anchor called Anna Andrews, who will do almost anything for her career. When she’s asked to cover a murder in Blackdown, she tries to say no, but is pressured into going. It’s soon revealed that Blackdown is actually the sleepy countryside village where she grew up, and we find out that Anna isn’t just reporting the story of this murder. She’s at the very heart of it.
DCI Jack Harper is suspicious of Anna’s involvement in the case, but Jack realizes things are even worse than he thought when he becomes a suspect in his own murder investigation.
His & Hers is about the lies we tell ourselves, and the things we will do to protect those we love from the truth. Alternating between Anna’s and Jack’s points of view, it tells two different sides of one story, and will hopefully keep you guessing until the very end!
CBTB: Introduce us to the protagonists of this story. Who are they, and how would you describe them to someone meeting them for the first time?
AF: BBC news anchor Anna Andrews has worked hard to get where she is, she’s sacrificed everything, but Anna has secrets. For starters, she drinks. A lot. And even keeps a personal breathalyser in her car. She lives alone in her London flat near Waterloo, but Anna used to be married. She used to have a little girl. And she used to live in a sleepy village called Blackdown in the British countryside. There’s a reason why Anna never wanted to go back, but that’s a secret too.
DCI Jack Harper had his reasons for running away from London and starting a new life in the countryside. He left his wife because he thought it was best for both of them, but Jack misses his ex. And he misses the buzz of being a detective in the city. Not a lot happens in Blackdown where he lives now. So when the body of a woman is discovered, he’s thrilled to have something a little more interesting to work on. Until the victim turns out to be someone he knew, and Jack becomes a suspect in his own murder investigation.
CBTB: If you had to describe your new novel in three adjectives, which would you choose?
AF: Dark. Twisty. Unpredictable.
CBTB: Can you identify a particular moment or experience that inspired His & Hers?
AF: I worked on the BBC One O’clock News for years, so although His & Hers is 100% fiction, it was fun for me to revisit that world inside my head while writing. I remember the exact date and place and time His & Hers was born, but it’s hard to explain without giving something away.
I always think that books are a bit like children for authors, and we’re not really allowed to have favourites, but His & Hers is mine. It was my favourite novel to write, and my first readers all said it was their favourite to read, so I’m really looking forward to sharing this story.
CBTB: Your previous novels (which I’ve absolutely loved!) have been dark, twisty psychological thrillers that develop in some truly unexpected (and creepy!) directions. Would you characterize HIS & HERS the same way?
AF: Yes! I read all genres, but dark, twisty psychological thrillers do tend to be my favourites, which is probably why I enjoy writing them so much! This book feels faster to me, with even more twists and turns than before, and it was such fun to write. I always think there are two sides to every story, and who you choose to trust is only ever up to you. His & Hers is that choice in a novel. It feels a bit like inviting a reader to get on a roller coaster with me and my characters. There will be lots of unexpected twists and turns, and it might get a little dark, but when we reach the end I hope they will have enjoyed the ride!
Huge thanks to Alice for taking the time to answer my questions! His & Hers will be available July 28, 2020, and you can find pre-order links for the book below.
